HAVEN HOUSING COMMEMORATING 40 YEARS OF SERVING WOMEN AND CHILDREN EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS

Art Competition Winners to be Celebrated at ‘Picture Safe Haven’ Block Party

Saturday, July 31, 5 – 8 p.m.

Minneapolis --- Since 1981, North Minneapolis-based Haven Housing has provided shelter and housing for more than 15,000 women and children in need of refuge, stability, and opportunity. To commemorate providing a “Safe Haven for Forty Years,” Haven Housing hosted a poster art competition seeking designs that depicted a safe haven.

The contest was curated in partnership with ROHO Collective, a network that embraces, supports, and nurtures emerging and professional artists of color (rohocollective.org), with support from Joan Vorderbruggen, director of Hennepin Theatre District Engagement.

Haven Housing and ROHO Collective selected four winning artists, all of whom are artists of color or Northside residents. The winning artists were awarded $500 to complete their designs.

“Art is healing. It brings joy. And it is activism,” says Haven Housing Executive Director Monica Nilsson. “I am excited that the winning artists are helping Haven Housing share our values and vision with the community.”

Several of the artists will gather and posters will be displayed together for the first time at Haven Housing’s Picture Safe Haven Block Party to be held Saturday, July 31 from 5 – 8 p.m. at Haven Housing (1803 N. Bryant Ave., Minneapolis).

The block party, which will be held as part of the last evening of the FLOW Northside Arts Crawl (www.northmpls.org/flow), will also feature family-friendly art activities, free food, live music, and a chance to meet the artists. The public is welcome to attend this free event. They may also take home a free, limited-edition print of one of the winning posters.

Nilsson says, “We’ve been in North Minneapolis for 40 years, and will be here for many years into the future. We’re looking forward to welcoming neighbors and visitors to our block party as we build stronger connections with artists and our Northside community.”

The mission of Haven Housing is to provide women and children in crisis or transition with a stable environment and the opportunity to explore options for their future.
