MINNEAPOLIS, MN - Haven Housing’s Board of Directors has elected Shereese Turner, Chief Program Officer with Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity, as the chair of the Board of Directors. Turner becomes the first former shelter guest to serve in this capacity, joining a newly elected leadership team that includes three women of color. Turner, who has served on the board at Haven Housing since 2019, said she is honored to take on this new role.
“I have experienced first hand the life-changing work at Haven Housing and what a difference it makes when women and families in crisis have a safe haven,” said Turner. “I am committed to dedicating my passion, skills, and abilities in making sure dreams and transformation are possible for all, no matter their past or present circumstances.”
“We are overjoyed for Shereese Turner to take on this leadership role at such an important moment in the future of Haven Housing,” said Lissa Jones-Lofgren, interim Executive Director. “Sherese will bring an equity lens and a wealth of experience as our Board Chair as we continue to meet our mission of ensuring women and women-led families in crisis or transition have shelter, housing, and the opportunity to explore options to create a better future.”
Turner was drawn to serve on Haven Housing’s Board of Directors due to her own past. Soon after arriving in the Twin Cities in 1995, Shereese found herself at the doorsteps of Haven Housing’s family shelter.
“I escaped the Southside of Chicago, a life of abuse, homelessness, and hopelessness,” said Turner. “I hold a unique position on Haven Housing’s board, as my feet were once planted in the shoes of those we serve. Haven Housing provided support and services to me and my family when I needed it most, and I am forever grateful. As Board Chair, I have an opportunity to share my story, lift up others, and help Haven Housing help women and families like mine that needed safety and support to have a chance at beginning anew.”
Turner now works at Habitat for Humanity - Twin Cities, leading the Programs and Services division with a focus on Homeownership Development, Community Outreach, Neighborhood Revitalization, Foreclosure Prevention, Post-Purchase Support, as well as their home modification and repair programs. Prior to joining Habitat in 2018, she spent over 11 years as the Director of Programs and Operations at Twin Cities R!SE.
“In my board experience spanning over 10 years, I’ve learned the importance of engaging other board members and the community while honoring the stories of the people we serve.”
In addition to electing Turner as Board Chair, Haven Housing elected additional new leaders including:
Debra Spears, Ascension Catholic Academy, Vice-Chair
Mary Dedeaux-Swinton, Community Volunteer, Secretary
Michael Laux, Wells Fargo, Treasurer
