As an organization that serves the specific needs of women and women-led families, we are committed to ensuring each woman has the right to not have a baby, have a child safely, and parent in a safe and healthy environment. The leaked U.S. Supreme Court draft opinion puts the health and safety of women at risk and doesn't protect babies.
If we truly valued children, the US would have excellent and free universal maternal care. We'd have months of parental leave for all parents. If we valued every child, we'd build enough housing—homes that would be stocked with free diapers and formula, and where visits from a lactation consultant would be free. If our concern was for children, we'd have free and high-quality childcare and education available for all ages.
We are grateful to live and work in a state where our right to decide to have an abortion is protected by the constitution. However, we've witnessed the effect of recent legislation that restricts access to healthcare and intimidates providers and those seeking care. These laws disproportionately harm Black, Indigenous, and immigrant women and women living on low incomes.
Haven Housing will keep supporting our program participants to access the care they choose for their body, their family, and their life. And we will work with our partners to advocate for better healthcare, more housing, access to education, and stronger supportive services.
